From Rio to the Race Track: A Dual Journey of Giving and Receiving

Meet Mariana Garoiu Quintanilha, a motorsport marketing professional from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, whose mentorship story exemplifies the transformative power of both giving and receiving guidance. With six years in the motorsport industry specialising in sponsorships, marketing, and hospitality, Mariana has experienced mentorship from both sides—as someone eager to share her knowledge and as someone hungry to learn from others.
Mariana's path into the FIA Women In Motorsport mentorship program was driven by a dual purpose. As a mentor, she was inspired to share her hard-earned experience from six years in motorsports, particularly wanting to help more women break into this traditionally male-dominated field. "I wanted to help more girls have the opportunity to work in this predominantly male field," she explains.
Simultaneously, as a mentee, she sought to "gain insights from the diverse experiences of other women from around the world"—a testament to her belief that learning never stops, regardless of experience level.
One of Mariana's most rewarding experiences as a mentor came from connecting with women who had doubts about their career paths. "I connected with girls who had many doubts about their careers, and it was a pleasure to help them by showing some opportunities and paths to discover what they can be in the future," she shares.
But perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Mariana's story is how mentorship came full circle for her. Through the program, she connected with Alessandra Menini, who extended an invitation that would change everything: volunteering at the race control of the São Paulo Grand Prix Formula 1.
"It was a dream coming true and an amazing experience for my career."
This opportunity not only enhanced her knowledge but brought her closer to her ultimate goal of working in Formula 1. The connection was so impactful that she's now working in a temporary position at the São Paulo Grand Prix.
Being a mentor has profoundly impacted Mariana's self-perception and confidence. "It helped me to believe more in myself when I saw how the girls reacted to my job and experience. They showed me respect and inspiration regarding my career, which was gratifying."
This experience reinforced an important truth about mentorship: the exchange of knowledge and perspectives benefits everyone involved. As Mariana puts it, "When you are committed to listening to others' perspectives and sharing your experiences, it helps the other person see themselves from a different angle, which is enriching."
For those considering becoming mentors, Mariana offers encouraging words: "They will discover that they have so much experience and knowledge than they might imagine. The exchange of experiences will always improve someone's life."
To potential mentees, her message is simple but powerful: "Just go for it! You will be amazed and surprised by the exchange of experiences and opportunities that women will provide you."
As someone deeply embedded in the motorsport industry, Mariana recommends the FIA programs—Girls on Track, Career Shift, and the Women in Motorsport Mentorship Programme—as valuable tools for exchanging knowledge and experiences in the motorsport environment.
When asked to sum up what mentorship means to her, Mariana's response captures the essence of her journey:
"The opportunity to get closer to my dream job. Gratitude."
Her story demonstrates that mentorship isn't just about reaching your destination—it's about the connections, growth, and opportunities that emerge along the way. Through both giving and receiving guidance, Mariana has not only advanced her own career but has helped pave the way for other women in motorsport.
